WHAT IS CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is the second most predominant and recognized of the active chemicals in the cannabis plant. CBD is one of many hundreds of components in cannabis. It does not cause the typical “high” associated with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD.
The effects of CBD vary based upon the concentration of various terpenes and how they interact with each other. It is known to be calming and relaxing. People report that CBD has helped with a variety of health conditions, including back pain, arthritis and joint pain, anxiety, nausea, and headaches.
There are two main types of pain: musculoskeletal and nerve. CBD could benefit both conditions and there is some evidence which suggests CBD works best for pain when combined with a little THC.
The only CBD medication that is currently FDA-approved is Epidiolex, which the agency approved last year for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy.
Side effects are typically minimal in comparison to the side effects possible with many pharmaceuticals, i.e. nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can interact with some medications, so it is best to check with a health care provider if you are taking medications.
CBD is considered a dietary supplement. The FDA does not currently regulate the safety and purity of dietary supplements.
